Rekha, who celebrates her birthday today, is recognized not only for her iconic performances but also for embodying resilience and strength. Recently, her close friend Neetu Kapoor shared a touching story, revealing that Rekha had extended heartfelt ‘duas’ for Rishi Kapoor’s long life on her own birthday, after he had undergone cancer treatment. Rekha’s heartfelt wish, “Meri umar bhi chhote sarkar ko lag jaaye” (May my years be added to his life), left a deep impression, reflecting her strong bond and affection for the Kapoor family.
Neetu recalled, “She asked after my husband’s health. It was her birthday that day, and she said, ‘Meri umar bhi chhote sarkar ko lag jaaye’. (May my years be added to his life). She would call my husband Chhote Sarkar. Everyone was so moved that on her birthday, she was sending duas of a long life for my husband.”
Neetu also shared insights into the changing dynamic between herself, Rishi, and Rekha. During their early relationship, Rishi wasn’t particularly fond of Rekha, but that shifted after Neetu and Rishi got married. By 1990, Rishi and Rekha worked together on Azaad Desh Ke Ghulam, and Rishi often invited her over for dinner, encouraging her to get out more. True to her independent nature, Rekha would visit on her own terms. Neetu also noted that Rekha has a special affection for their children, Ranbir and Riddhima, and their granddaughters.
Rekha’s film journey began incredibly early, at just three years old, and she made her Hindi film debut in 1969 with Saawan Bhadon. However, her breakthrough came with Ghar, where her powerful performance earned her critical acclaim. Rekha’s career is marked not only by her mesmerizing roles but also by her resilience, overcoming challenges and controversies to cement her place as one of Bollywood’s most enduring and cherished icons.
Rishi Kapoor, the cherished Bollywood actor, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2018 and spent nearly a year receiving treatment in New York. Despite his illness, he remained optimistic and stayed connected with fans and the film industry. In April 2020, his health deteriorated, leading to his admission at Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai. On April 30, 2020, at the age of 67, Rishi Kapoor passed away, leaving behind a lasting legacy of memorable performances and a significant loss to Indian cinema.
